2281  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S5 Setup [HD] on: February 19, 2015, 06:57:21 AM
Tell me about push pull setups, please. Any sense in doing such? Step up to the Noctuna fans? I do like the price on the 120's in the 2 pack.

I'm looking to lower the noise. I don't want to spend money to quiet it down a bit and gain 5-10 degrees while doing so, Everything under 50 degrees now, and I like that, So no need for twisty LEDs that would be fun for about a day.

Also, looks like the S5 has 2x fan 4pin outputs. Would that run 2x the 120's you mentioned? I see fan controllers and all that, don't want to get involved if I don't hae to.

thanks dogie!

also, think i'm picking up a NIB evga 1300g2 supernova gold blah blah. So excited.

Pull > push pull > push but only in a sealed environment like an ASICMiner Cube, or an S3 although that wasn't great. In an open environment, its push pull > push > pull. In this case though, you're going to NEED to run 2 fans in order to maintain enough cooling with slower fans.

I'd still go with the Corsair's, they're the perfect balance of performance and noise. Yes the fans should run straight off the headers, worst case you'll have to use molex adapters and power them from the PSUs.
2282  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Guide] Dogie's Comprehensive Bitmain Antminer S5 Setup [HD] on: February 18, 2015, 04:28:49 PM
Beginning to believe that the evga 1300 g2 IS the way to go when powering two S5 home miners. Currently running 1x CX750M each and no excessive heat anywhere, miners running cool, great hashing speed at 350. No plans to change from 350 anytime soon. Not broke = don't fix.

Its a greatly praised PSU that one, but not easily found at sensible prices in the EU and so Corsair remains king over here.

Dogie! Either I'm missing an inside joke about you having no clue re fan swaps for the S5, or I'm somewhat confused and fairly disappointed. Considering the S5 is one of the very top choices today for home mining, and it is roundly agreed that they are loud considering their intended purpose. There are a dozen or so 120mm contenders out there that actually push some air. I don't need them whisper quiet, but surely shaving some db's is within the realm of possibility.

The user who asked has literally just flamed me in another thread, then came in here asking for help. I kindly send him on his way. My personal recommendation is 2x S3 fans if you've got them lying around or my go to is the SP120 Performance editions [Without affiliate] [With affiliate]. There are also PWM versions if you think you'll need it in the future [Without affiliate] [With affiliate]. They're right at the barrier between high performance and not being too annoying and I generally use them on most miners I silence.

Do you not recommend anything at all no matter what - so as to not interfere with user warranty issues due to modding the fans? Something more sinister like sponsorships colliding?!

If I were doing it on behalf of Bitmain, I'd be telling everyone to overclock and do mods so they don't have warranty costs Tongue

Would like to plug it directly into S5's 4pin on top. Don't need silence, but seems like there are 2K rpm fans out there making ~90-100 CFM at 30-40 decibels. Anyone want to venture into the muck of this question? I'd also like to have spinners (LED's) in the fan just because why not?

Fans like the SP120 will plug directly into an S5 and aren't silent but aren't horrific. They're ~2200 rpm with a high static pressure which is required in a situation like this more than just straight 'CFM' ratings. You don't tend to get LEDs on fans like this and above as they usually all go into servers and such like. There is a similar AF120 series which is LED, but isn't suitable for S5s as they're not powerful enough.

Thanks all. Dogie this site is my source for 95% all things bitcoin. Buy and sell gear here, trust your word, just want to hear from you on the subject. If there is an unbiased fan comparison somewhere would love to see it.

Thanks for your kind words.

Hey Dogie,

Great thread!! I was looking for info a few months ago on how to mine other coins with my cube but couldn't find anything and then just gave you and my cube has just been collecting dust ever since. A friend just sent me the link to this thread and I have been reading through the pages but there is so much to read so I thought I'd ask, hope you don't mind.

Any advice on how to configure my cube to mine another sha256 coin besides Bitcoin?

Regards
Ricky

Hi Ricky, thanks for your kind words. There is no reason you can't mine other coins on the Cube. The way you'll go about this is to find a pool on the coin you want, and in the .bat file enter that pool's details. Other than that, the instructions from section 4 are identical.

Hi Guys,

Can I use the following power supply for two antminers S5 : http://www.fsp-europe.com/aurumpro1200.php

Thanks

Its pushing it a bit close for an unknown quality PSU.

It's one of the best PSUs(fsp stands for Fortron Source Power which is the well known brand Fortron) - what do you mean by unknown Smiley? Just look at the awards list on the link that I've posted.

My point is if the PSU is 1200W (80 plus gold and stable characteristics) - is it ok to handle 2*590W=1180W(which is supposed to be the power of the two antminers S5) at the regular hash rate without much overcloking ?

Capacity wise its fine as its really 2x500W pre PSU, I'm just not intimately familiar with that brand.

Anyone put a S5 in an S3 case (with the top) and then see how well a push/pull dual fan setup works?

not much improvement in fact a bit worse ,,    I have settled with 1 delta as a push and a 367 freq.

If I want to I can get freq 412  and 1331 gh but too many fans to do it.

I wasn't aware that they are interchangeable.  Is it as simple as installing the S5 innards (blades and controller) into an S3 case or some other way?  I think the S5 are a tad narrower and a bit longer (if a 2nd pull 12038 fan is installed at the other end) than the S3 based on the dimension in the specs.  Note that there is also a cover on the base of the S3.  How is the mod done?

S5:
300mm x 137mm x 155mm
S3:
331mm x 137mm x 160mm

So identical widths, S3 a bit higher due to the top and bottom plates it seems. S3 is longer due to the additional fan, but that should account for 35mm, which suggests that the S5 is a bit longer.
