Never mind the aliens, ... yet.

The most suprising event this year is not the assassination of the Iranian top general Qasem Soleimani, BLM, wildfires ore Covid-19 but the release of U.F.O footages from 2005/2015/2017 by the U.S goverment.

Aliens smell like farts. If they land they will stink the place out.

https://www.popularmechanics.com/space/deep-space/a29932234/what-would-aliens-smell-like/

Quote
...Which led my son to one inescapable conclusion: If aliens exist, they probably smell like farts.

I don’t know enough about farts, Mars, or aliens to refute him, so I reached out to somebody who does: Clara Sousa-Silva, a molecular astrophysics postdoctoral associate at MIT.

“Your son is absolutely correct in his inference,” she told me. “Most of my work in astrobiology looks at anaerobic environments, which have a lot in common with the environments that produce farts. So, yes, aliens are reasonably likely to smell like farts.”

Now I know what Ripley was smelling...

Given the situation, I'd likely be smelling my own shit.

I have often wondered about alien life from other stars..if they have visited this solar system and this planet.
What possible reason would they have to invest significant resources traveling trillions and trillions of miles to visit a insignificant planet circling a unremarkable main sequence star on the outer edge of a galaxy basically in the middle of nowhere.
If they are still here observing for some reason and unwilling or unable to reveal their presence in full.

I think about the complexity of escaping a gravity well. The energy required just to get into orbit from Earth is immense and if the planet was just 50% larger in diameter standard physics would make that task impossible.
https://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2017/07/06/if_earth_was_50_larger_we_might_be_stuck_here.html

How fortunate we that Earth has just the right atmospheric composition and density to make fire, thus being able to smelt ores into metals. Leading us into the technological age and the ability to construct machines capable of leaving our atmosphere.
It is some 11.186 km/s to escape earths gravity and a increase up to 16.6 km/s to leave the solar system. Thats leaving from Earth of course..the farther you fall into the Sun's gravity well the more delta v needed for escape.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_velocity#List_of_escape_velocities

Thats just the solar system now...if you want to travel galactic you need somewhere at the minimum of 500-600 km/s of delta v to escape Sagittarius A*'s clutches.
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/proceedings-of-the-international-astronomical-union/article/rave-survey-constraining-the-local-galactic-escape-speed/8CEC76CD4DDE5F795640C2FEA0936F68#

All of the technology described above possible, but only on a limited scale with the energy densities humanity now achieves.
A civilisation perhaps only a few thousand years older than our own 'recorded' ten thousand years might be capable of such feats.
Let alone one that might have existed a million years before humans rose up from the plains. A trivial amount of time in the grand scheme of things and entirely possible.

Except for a few things...where are the signs? Besides a few grainy videos and a plethora of unsubstantiated testimony..nothing so far. And astronomically speaking..zip as well..no sub relativistic transients..or relativistic ones for that matter.
Ships traveling at any significant speed between stars in normal space would be extremely obvious in stellar photography. So would the energy signature used to achieve that speed.

So it again begs the question..why? If they have the technology to completely mask their presence and travel the stars unobserved..why the hell are they here watching us?

A clown act? A comedy or perhaps more like a tragedy? Some form of zoo run amuck? One could claim shoddy custodianship if that is the case.

On the other side of that...I have thought about what it might look like if I was an alien and encountered a human for the first time. What my impressions might be.

Intelligent bipedal/binocular hominid with non-cooperative societal constructs and homicidal tendencys.
Incredibly environmentally destructive while being adaptive to change and a prolific ability to reproduce given the right conditions.
Eats and converts matter internally into energy.
Must consumes daily liters of liquid hydrogen/oxygen and most actually enjoy bathing and swimming in the stuff.

So on to what I really was thinking and wanted to talk about.   Tongue

Dark matter and dark beings. How the Universe appears to be made up of less than 5% baryonic matter..the other 25% being dark matter and 70% dark energy.
Humanity manipulating and consuming a substance perhaps the majority of the Universes inhabitants can't see and interact with. Being made out of this rare matter, living in and on the edge of immense crushing burning oblate spheroids of the stuff.

If there are dark beings, how violent and strange our baryonic Universe must seem with all these strange particles and waves bashing around.

It could be that humanity is more alien than one might think and might be worthy of study.

I don't even trust my laptop's camera. It's usually covered in black tape.

Same here. As well as the front facing selfie cam on my phone. And phones get stored in another room out of earshot for 90% of the day.

Honestly, anyone who willingly purchases and brings these 'eyes and ears' spy devices into their home deserves to be surveilled. They will watch and listen to everything you do and say without your consent.
The big question is how to hack them so they only talk to your own personal servers. Not cloud shit, a unix box on your home network.

That way you get a really interesting and cheap platform. But step #1 has to be a lobotomy.

Planets die, like everything else. For life to sustain, it needs to move to the next planet. Hawking agreed with my thesis, so...

If they are still here observing for some reason and unwilling or unable to reveal their presence in full.

Unwilling, not unable. They have met marcus in person, and have reevaluated their position for the time being.

I think about the complexity of escaping a gravity well. The energy required just to get into orbit from Earth is immense and if the planet was just 50% larger in diameter standard physics would make that task impossible.

Stop thinking in ape terms. Anti gravity exists. Inherently. We're just too slow.

How fortunate we that Earth has just the right atmospheric composition and density to make fire, thus being able to smelt ores into metals.

Nothing special. Billion of stars in our galaxy, and billions of galaxies. Do the math.

Thats just the solar system now...if you want to travel galactic you need somewhere at the minimum of 500-600 km/s of delta v to escape Sagittarius A*'s clutches.

Time dilation. It's a constraint even for the most advanced species. Only from the hood, dawg.

Time is sooooo fucking ... relative.

Ships traveling at any significant speed between stars in normal space would be extremely obvious in stellar photography. So would the energy signature used to achieve that speed.

They don't ... travel. They bend the space around them. Instantly.

So it again begs the question..why? If they have the technology to completely mask their presence and travel the stars unobserved..why the hell are they here watching us?

Because we're still dumb. So that we don't kill ourselves out to extinction.

What we don't really understand, we call it ... dark. So moot of us.

If there are dark beings, how violent and strange our baryonic Universe must seem with all these strange particles and waves bashing around.

Do not forget that SwayStar wanted to deplatform WO as an “extremely toxic community”.*  Quote-unquote.

* Original topic title:  “Should Bitcoin Wall Observer thread be deleted?”  SwayStar later edited the title and OP only to call for merits to be disabled in WO.

I always comport myself as a gentleman, and I suggest that others do likewise.  I think that I am also well on record as communicating professionally with the few females who are interested in technical or financial topics, who are here for that purpose, and who behave themselves as mature adults instead of tantrum-throwing toddlers.

Whereas I read CryptoTourist as giving a big fuck-you to deplatforming, to cancel culture—to the notion that more than twenty-seven thousand pages of forum posts should be memory-holed because someone Got Offended On The Internet.  Here, honey, have a dose of “toxic”.  No, you can’t delete it.  This forum does not have a “Code of Conduct”, a “Trust and Safety Team”, or other features of a padded playpen.  Anyway, that was my take on it.

Accordingly, sirazimuth can go skullfuck himself with a dildo sculpted from his own sanctimonious bullshit.

I am using uncharacteristic expletives for a reason.

For the record.  At greater length than before.  Because apparently, some people just don’t get it.  Sometimes, I need to be less subtle.

On another note...

On Whores and Historical Perspective

...regularly adapted to problems and scenarios specific to modernity.  Etc...

~snip

[—discussion of whoring—]

 C'mon man.

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=whore

An exposé on nullian hypocrisy will suffice.

Perhaps you may mistake me for a Christian—or for indulging the modern Victorian prudishness which, by no accident, coincided with stupid men’s invention of feminism.  Do you suppose that I buy into the Nineteenth Century’s orgy of modern democratic delusions?  Given the implausibility that I could be so foolish, I think it’s more probable that you have just never heard the old aristocratic aphorism, stated as to the lower classes, “The whore protects the virtue of the wife.”

Men will fuck women who are not their own wives.  That is human nature, on a level that cannot be changed unless humans are replaced by meat-robots (n.b.).  If common prostitutes are unavailable to low-class men who can neither access nor afford mistresses and courtesans, then they will chase each others’ wives, and society will fall apart.  To recognize this fact of life is necessary for wise governance—but of course, it would be indiscreet to mention this to the masses who need to be governed.  Oops.  Anyway, that is the old-fashioned view; attempts to outright eradicate prostitution are mostly new to modern democracies steeped in feminist dogmata.

So as for the lower classes.

Moreover, given that you name yourself after Homer, I’d expect that you would recognize my habitual allusions to classy sex in classical antiquity—including my posts with classical and neoclassical statues of Phryne, the hetaera who has inspired poets and artists for millennia.  That is neither modern nor degenerate.  For example:

I usually don’t label these things.  If you neither know, nor seek to know by yourself, then you do not deserve to know.  Anyway, this is a statue of Phryne—history’s most famous practitionress of the oldest profession:
What, you want a clearer view?  (Do a double-take:  Yes, this is a statue.)

nullius’ girlfriend

Occasionally, as hereby, I do explain just a bit.
Loading image...

That is a statute of the most famous ancient Greek ἑταίρᾱν, the cultural equivalent of a classical gaṇikā.

I must remark but briefly:  Phryne was once tried on a criminal charge of blasphemy.  As an argument in her defence, her advocate stripped her naked before the tribunal.  That was his actual argument:  She was too beautiful to be guilty!  The Greeks associated physical beauty with moral excellence (and ugliness with wickedness).  Phryne was acquitted.

How do you accuse me of hypocrisy?

You need a better dictionary.  Preferably one that, among other things, gives etymologies.  LOL!  A philology joke.  There I go being subtle again.  I cherish subtlety, because I care.

Edited for clarity.

I was more concerned with 'modernity' than 'whore' but I appreciate the insight nonetheless.  Cryptotourist understood what I wrote and had already defended your hypocrisy as trolling; I was happier with that explanation.

I named myself after Homer  Embarrassed

**LOTTA CAPSTYPINGS***
Happy Saturday!

Just to be clear, you seem to be stating that a future where transaction fees being $100, $1000 or even more per on-chain tx is a distinct possibility?

That as a possibility is implicit in my thoughts, I'd say, yes.

OK, so here's the relevant followup question. When average tx fees are $1000, what is the typical profile of a person willing to run a non-mining validator? Let's start simple on this - how many tx per year might the average such person make?

I like where you are going.

But since the requirement for validating nodes is kept low it would continue to be in EVERYONE's best interest to run one. Even if I am not directly writing data to the block chain I would benefit by monitoring those who do.  In fact monitoring the whale moves of banks, governments, and retired WO members would be of great sport and interest.  Not just for security, but for knowledge.  I used to think the Whale Alert accounts on twitter were a novelty, but they are actually an indicator.

People ran Seti@Home even though they got no green stamps from Martians for doing it, and same thing with the folding app for the genome.  And I would say validating one of the most important ledgers on the planet would command MUCH greater incentive.  Bitcoin is for enemies after all.

And as layer 2 is currently being built out people who run lightning nodes are STRONGLY incentivized to run a corresponding Bitcoin node.  I think as second+ layer solutions are developed we will see more and more interest in that among a much wider group than the hobbyists (like me) who do now.

On top of that I think we will see mining hardware possibly become commoditised.   As energy production changes BITCOIN is poised to soak up a lot of spotlight.  This will most likely decentralize even MINING nodes.  People with solar energy systems may be able to choose to sell excess energy to the grid, or instead use it on commodity ASIC hardware to produce Bitcoin.  And by that time  the price of energy will be at least joined at the hip with BTC production if not outright dictated by it.

What do you think?

Well, I know several people that run non-mining validators. I am not aware of a single one that regularly run reports upon the chain data in order to uncover trends and such. I mean, other than the commercial (e.g. blockchain.info) or avocational (e.g. WhaleCalls) operators. Maybe I'm just living a cloistered life, but I don't believe that such data mining is something that the typical non-mining validator does. Accordingly, I really don't think that it is realistic for such hobby to cause many to run non-mining validators regardless of computing infrastructure demands.

What I think is that it is unrealistic to expect anyone that does zero, one, or even a handful of txs a year to have an incentive to go through the effort of running a non-mining validator. I think that forcing people off-chain for their txs due to cost will limit the population of Bitcoiners that would even consider such.

You say it is in everyone's interest to run a non-mining validator. I really can't disagree with you there, with the caveat that 'everyone' is really 'every user of Bitcoin'. And that that interest is countermanded by the time, toil, and treasure demands. I just don't think the tradeoff is worth it for the average Bitcoin user.

Yet even today, when the demands are quite small, and there is still a pretty significant percentage of Bitcoiners among Bitcoin users, vanishingly few run non-mining validators. And while I don't have figures in front of me, I don't think the count of peers is growing at all, let along at the apparent rate of new entrants into the ecosystem.

I also think Lightning is a non-starter. It was gonna be ready 'in two weeks'* four years ago. Yet today, there is more Bitcoin using Ethereum as L2 than Lightning. Maybe the complexity that is foisted upon the user can be lessened somehow, but last I looked, it was still just an inscrutable mess. Unless it gets a massive UX upgrade, I really can't see it being used by other than niche hobbyists and custodial middlemen.

*OK, in 18 months five years ago.

I would like to see mining power disseminated further as well. Though I don't expect such, Sure, maybe cheap hashers can be spread all around. But hashers as a general rule don't decide what goes into the blocks they are trying to solve. Those decisions lay in a small number of pool operators.

Oh well, that's my two bits.

Regarding criminals:
Leaked documents reveal some of the world’s biggest banks allowed criminals to move dirty money around the world

I'm sure this is true. But what is the alternative? The remedy you seem to be seeking is to have the banks refuse to follow the directions of their customers for what to do with that customer's money. That cure is orders of magnitude worse than the disease.

(Of course, I am of the bent that 'money laundering' is a phony trumped up 'crime'. If money being moved is the proceeds of some crime, prosecute the crime that yielded the money in the first place, not the simple transaction of free commerce)

Jbreher, don't worry to much about LN just relax. LN is still under healthy development they keep rolling out updates on a regulare base.

It will get there eventually just have more patience, projects like LN takes a lot of time to make it consumer friendly.

And do yourself a favor stop living in that *18 months from now* bubble, it was nothing but Roger's marketing gimmick to promote bCash.

Bigblockers are literally non-existing anymore i haven't seen one for a long time. They will fork bCash again in November, that is more troublesome than stressing out about LN atleast for anybody owns a bCash bag.

I guess Mr. Carpenter was way ahead of the times. Unreal.  Roll Eyes

I'm sure I must have watched (part of) this movie, but I just can't remember anything about it right now...

Already downloading downloaded the remastered version. Will watch it tonight.

I'm a big fan or Orwellian-type movies. Should watch Soylent Green one more time. Watched it 1st time when I was a little child (parents didn't care much about movie ratings), and it has affected me in certain ways...

Watched it last night. And no, I hadn't watched it before, not even part of it. Which is strange, given that I've watched a great many movies of this period...

Thought-provoking, albeit a bit cheesy and cliché at times. Very good for its time (1988). Reminded me of Soylent Green and Brazil (which I should watch again).

The fight between Nada & Frank was hilarious. Just wear the fucking glasses man! Damn!

Nada: "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum." Epic!

Good suggestion, thanks Karartma1.

The problem is elsewhere.

Today, you don't give a fuck. But what if in 20 years (for example's sake), you are someone incredibly rich and incredibly important.
They will use all that collected info - most likely against you. [highest bidder wins]

Maybe you don't know..... But you're writing with the most important man/occupant of this laptop i'm sitting behind, what are they gonna use against me.... I'm not afraid someone throwing my dick on the net  Roll Eyes Still if i'm a normal guy, not doing the most worst things, cheating when with someone or stealing or .... Then they can use what they like, its not that i'm gonna be the next president of the US even not the King of this little Belgium  Cheesy
I might or will be important for some, but still I have never been bothered with to much sh*t .......
