1681  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which one's better Wasabi or Sparrow on: June 22, 2023, 07:49:46 PM
It's not difficult, just time consuming to let your node sync for the first time. If your node and Sparrow are on the same device, then Sparrow will connect to your node with a couple of clicks, and connecting to the Whirlpool coordinator via Tor is a simple as having Tor running in the background and Sparrow does the rest.
You don't have to explain this to me, I was putting myself in place of newbies who know only to click and open wallet, everything else is complicated for them.
People like comfort and ease of use, and most people already showed how much they (don't) care about privacy....
Samurai wallet is controversial at best, and I don't really trust them so much to use it for this purpose.
1682  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: A Non-Custodial wallet, Atomic Wallet, being compromised on: June 22, 2023, 07:46:31 PM
And since they only talk to their own back end SPV servers they have a good idea of your addresses (and the funds in them) since the wallet is asking for them.
Note, this is not just them it's how any lite wallet works if you connect to their servers. So, they may not know 100% who has what, but they can get a really good idea.
This guys are not skilled enough to track and monitor everything, and even with this it's impossible for people to lose so much money with hacks like this.
I suspected from start that this was insider job, just one worker or ex-worker is enough to silently distribute and release malicious app update.

And this is a bit of a side rant, but I am going to put it out there anyway. Just because it's open source does not mean it's better or more secure. There have been some GLARING security bugs that have been found in open source software that were there for YEARS and nobody caught it. 1000s of pairs of eyes on it and all of a sudden.....oops.
Well that is obvious, I can in theory create a malware and make it open source code... that doesn't means everyone should install it on their computers  Cheesy

I think they are going to shut down their business very soon, and last thing I heard they are in Kazakhstan court.

Where did you get that information from?

Interesting, I too would like to know more about this shut down please
Where did you get that information from?
It's common sense as a result of many lawsuits, and information about Kazakhstan court I found on internet like everyone else, so I can't confirm anything with certainty and I don't know exact source of info  Wink
I don't understand who in the right mind will make any business deal with this wallet company, or who is going to use them after this debacle.
1684  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum 4.4.5 Released on: June 22, 2023, 07:33:38 PM
The improvements mentioned in the release of Electrum 4.4.5 are only for Jade. Hopefully, this also applies to Trezor, as I experienced before.
Was this reported as bug?
If you want a faster solution maybe you should write about that on their github page.
I don't like many recent changed Electrum is making, but Sparrow wallet is always there as good alternative with hardware wallet support.
1685  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: The paranoid user's security guide for using Electrum safely. on: June 22, 2023, 07:27:09 PM
I think it’s pretty much just about it being a vector for malware. Since it’s autorunning by itself, I think it’s pretty unsafe when inserting USB drives and CDs or DVDs in case the inserted device is infected. I guess autorun/autoplay isn’t dangerous on its own, but combined with an infected drive you’re basically gonna accept possible malware with open arms lol Grin
You can disable autoplay easily in settings, but USB are usually much worse than CDs because you can easily add more stuff there and modify it.
Biggest problem I have with USB drives is that they can go crazy with no specific reason and make all data unusable.

That's a good point. There is a similar problem with smartphones, especially android ones, where we have many producers and many OS versions, distributed by phone producer. Sooner or later they stop publishing a new OS updates, then users should think twice if still want to use banking app etc. on not-updated phone.
I am not a fan of iPhones but they have longest support from all smartphones, and for Android devices Samsung and Pixels are one of the best with longest support.
Everything else is trash and I would not waste money on this devices, but maybe they can be used as alternative offline wallets for bitcoin (if done correctly).

I would +1 to DireWolfM14's suggestion above of Linux Mint. It is as simple to set up as you can get, and has a very "Windows" feel to the GUI, making the transition much easier. There are pretty comprehensive guides available as well: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
I don't like that Mint is based on Ubuntu, so Debian version is a bit better, but Fedora is much better in recent years and it's supper easy to install and use it.
1686  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Generating offline seed Electrum on: June 22, 2023, 07:20:55 PM
How can I do ? Is is the same if I turn off wifi on a more recent PC ?
Best option is to format hard drive and install free open source Linux OS, something like Fedora, Debian or Mint are OK.
You can even make dual installation with winOS if you never used Linux before and than install Electrum wallet on Linux.
I would not suggest upgrading to win10 or 11, they are privacy nightmare and they are much more affected by malware and viruses.

Any tips for generating seed offline without buying a new machine ?
You don't need to buy new machine for this.
One way of generating seed phrase offline is with using dices and computer that is not connected to internet to calculate last word.
Even old phone in airplane mode can be used to generate seed words with software wallet apps like Airgapped, but make sure to reset and disable everything.

1688  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Which one's better Wasabi or Sparrow on: June 21, 2023, 09:44:29 PM
If you've used Wasabi or Sparrow please share your knowledge. What's the best & worst experience using them? What advice would you offer friends about these mixing wallets?
Sparrow is way better Bitcoin wallet than Wasabi, it has better use interface but I wouldn't say any of them is better for mixing Bitcoin.
You can't use Sparrow for mixing coins until you run your own node and connect it with Samourai, that is not exactly user friendly for most newbies.
Wasabi on the other hand is using controversial coinjoin feature with coordinator, but it's very easy to use it out of the box, even for newbies.
But if I had to exclude mixing part than I would have to say that Sparrow is better overall Bitcoin wallet.
1689  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: List of VPN Service Providers - 2023 on: June 21, 2023, 09:03:39 PM
And there is a news out there from Mullvad: Introducing Mullvad Leta: a search engine used in the Mullvad Browser, but the problem is that it's only available for Mullvad users and isn't public.
First they created Mullvad browser that is based on Tor browser, and now they introduced new search engine.
I think this is a good idea but it's far from being used as a standard search engine, it only gives text result without images, news and other stuff, and that is very limited.
One more thing I don't like is that Leta search  is just using the same g00gle Search API.  Tongue

Talking about centralization and bias censored results in search engines:

1690  Economy / Reputation / Re: I've been hacked (Electrum 4.3.2) on: June 21, 2023, 08:23:01 PM
The generosity of both Coinomize and Yo!Mix team for understanding my situation and what had happened; I am forever in their debt.
The same goes for numerous members of this forum who pushed me not to give up.
Hey man I am really glad your debt is now fully forgiven and you can start clean again.
Yo!Mix did a truly honorable thing and they showed they are serious with their service.
Just don't forget to improve your security model for future work and try to minimize risks when you are dealing with money.
1691  Other / Meta / Re: Easiest way I can remove Wasabi recommendations from all of my past posts? on: June 21, 2023, 07:55:32 PM
As an initiative to stop this analysis and doxxing BS, I’m looking for the easiest way I can edit all my posts containing suggestions for readers to start using Wasabi or containing links to their docs. Is there a faster route than going through each and every single page of my posts and using CTRL + F to find those containing Wasabi’s name? I have quite a lot of such posts IIRC from when I used to support them heavily and I want them edited ASAP before anyone finds them and starts using their nonsense software.
You will have to do this manually, but searching all your posts with word Wasabi should be easy with Ninjastic website, than you have to edit all of them.
I honestly don't see any valid reason to do something like this, for me it's waste of time and your opinions can change in time.
You can't go back in past and change your thoughts from younger age, and changing the whole  flow of conversation in bitcointalk forum is also not good.
For example, If I liked potatoes in 2018, it wouldn't be good for me to edit all my posts from 2018 and say I hated potatoes back than.
1692  Other / Meta / Re: TalkImg.com - Image hosting for BitcoinTalk on: June 21, 2023, 07:47:39 PM
I know that this is more easier said than done, but what do you think about having a status page of the service? Something like this[1], albeit it wouldn't need to be that detailed. That way you could directly update the status there and people could use that url for reference.
I wish reddit was down more nowadays, it's becoming worse everyday Sad
There is also downdetector.com that monitors many popular websites, that means that third party services can do this work as well.
Maybe someone could create a bot to monitor TalkImg status, but better to do this in cooperation with joker_josue, we don't want his server to think someone is doing ddos attacks.

Mode of infection is always the same, crack softwares, torrents and warez, unsolicited emails.
Mode of infection is wInD0ws OS first, than everything else.
This is almost impossible to happen on Linux or Mac OS, and it's not only because they are safer but because it's easier for hackers to target win users.
There are 99% less malware on good Linux OS and most of the stuff can be installed, including everything Bitcoin related.
1695  Local / Hrvatski (Croatian) / Re: BTCmapa on: June 21, 2023, 06:03:32 PM

Imaju 0% poreza i nešto sitno VAT-a do 190k EUR godišnje.
Wink
1697  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Seed Generation in Hardware Wallets on: June 19, 2023, 08:46:03 PM
SeedSigner DIY device added to the list.
They have different approach for generating entropy compared to many other hardware wallets and 24-word BIP39 seed phrase can be created with 99 dice rolls, by taking a digital photo, or be doing coin flips.
Thank you @JL0 and @A S M for your contribution.

PS
If anyone notices any mistake in my list please tell me to make a correction.
You can also submit new wallets that are not listed yet, but only do it if you have official confirmation with links for entropy generation method.
1698  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Square is considering making a hardware wallet for Bitcoin on: June 19, 2023, 08:31:41 PM
Coinbase have already handed over plenty of customer information to various governments and authorities, which will definitely include all customer's withdrawal addresses. The difference now is as you point out - they can very easily get Block to hand over your cloud back ups and seize your coins directly out of your hardware wallet, just like they can do to Ledger Recover.
There is definite push for hardware wallets to start doing stuff like this and work with centralized exchanges.
It's not only Block and ledger wallet, in China they are doing the same thing with Safepal wallet and I am sure there will be more manufacturers joining ''the club''.
I just hope they all got a bit scared after people reacting furiously after ledger debacle.

Most other people really don't give a shit. They want to make money or they don't care about privacy and want to do other things with crypto.
Until it affects them on a personal level, than everyone is concerned.

For people who want to know what direction Block wallet is going you should check all their investors:

1699  Economy / Reputation / Re: What should I do if I think somebody soon will scam someone? on: June 19, 2023, 07:29:48 PM
What should I do? Just leave it?
Since Madhatters has not scammed anyone yet, so it's wrong to give any negative feedback, but I want people to be aware and careful.
You can't give negative feedback to someone just because you suspect he is alt account from another scammer.
First you need to find some proof of at least same style of writing, spelling mistakes, address connections, same social media accounts, etc.
If there was merit exchange between this members and if he is active in similar boards like TheChin0s than there is a reason for suspecting him, so you can monitor his activity for now.
