1761  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Foundation Passport Official Thread on: June 06, 2023, 07:07:08 PM
Not a re-write, a completely new piece of software/firmware is necessary for the next device, will be very clear why when we announce it Smiley
Interesting news... when can we expect this new devices to come out in public?

Looks like the cheapest reseller in EU is BitcoinBrabant  which offers it for € 329,95 € 259,95, the fair price as to me (I have paid ~ €80 more at time of purchase). You should hurry up if your intention is serious as "Batch 2 is limited to 2400 units."
I think I saw better deals in one more seller from Europe that was giving nice discounts if paid with Bitcoin, but I can't find it right.
They are registered in forum and I think their shop is located in Poland, but last time I checked they offered other hardware wallets also, not just Passport.
It's a good idea to find coupons and discounts if you can.

EDIT: It's shopinbit.com, they have 3% discount but Passport is currently unavailable.

That is that is because your not thinking like a paranoid tinfoil hat person. Also keep in mind that compromising device like this would not just be about compromising a hardware Bitcoin wallet, it would be about compromising thousands of IoT things that could be anywhere doing anything giving who knows whom access to who knows what.
On contrary, I am thinking like a paranoid tinfoiler most of the time, but I am realistic about this subject.
If you think this devices are compromised than you shouldn't use your smartphone, laptop or any other electronic device for anything related with bitcoin....since you are 100% ''paranoid tinfoil hat person''.

But why risk it, which is why I and then you pointed out that anybody getting these should only be buying them from m5stack.com or their approved suppliers.
Better don't risk anything and don't use bitcoin at all, your computer and smartphone are compromised already  Shocked
1763  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor hacked (again) on: June 06, 2023, 06:58:43 PM
I don't expect something even in 2024. Until then it's vaporware.
It's far from vaporware if they already have new chips ready for testing and they officially said new devices should be released in the time I said.
They recently published information with chip photographs and they started doing internal testing for all people working in Trezor.
It's not like they are inventing wheel all over again, they are just open sourcing the chips from experienced chip manufacturer.

Looking at the steep price jump from Trezor Model One to Model T, I'm not particularly confident that a new Trezor device with secure element will be moderately priced. But we might see maybe some basic SE Model and something as fancy as the Model T, now with SE and maybe camera, too? There is competition in the HW market and that's good.
New-gen Trezor device wont be cheap, that's for sure, but I would be ok with price around $200 to $300.

Industrial SD cards are quite reliable. These cards use pSLC technology rather than the cheap QLC found in conventional cards. Such cards are significantly more expensive, but this can be quite commensurate with your bitcoin investment. In addition, you should not forget about backups by placing them on cards from different manufacturers.
Yeah they are, until they stop working like all new flash storage devices.
Most new stuff made today is trash and it stops working right after warranty expires, happened to me and people I know many times.
One guy purchased brand new luxury Audi in 2021 (with Bitcoin), year after alternator died, and ever since he is going in service each months for electronic issues.
They are making most new electronic stuff shiny from the outside with intentional time-ticking error-bomb.
1764  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: IS ATOMIC WALLET HACK OR SCAM? 🔴 Immediately Withdraw your Funds on: June 05, 2023, 08:08:22 PM
You know situation with Atomic wallet is bad when you see Bleepingcomputer starts to write articles about it, with people losing over $35 million in crypto.
Someone said that there was a malware in one of recent download files so you should NOT open your Atomic wallet if you still have connected to internet, once you connect they have your seedphrase.
Solution is to use seed words from Atomic, import them to another wallet and move coins asap to different device, best hardware wallet.
Good alternative for Atomic wallet is open source wallet called Unstoppable, if you want to mess around with other coins, not just BTC.

Other guy maybe got inspired by lemon and potato puke special pizzas.
1766  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how to receive L-BTC from exchanges to Electrum wallet on: June 05, 2023, 07:43:26 PM
+ im just looking for a way to withdraw my btc earnings from binance to electrum with low fees
Why don't you just receive your earning directly in your wallet with BTC mainchain, instead of trusting centralized exchange and paying them fees for withdrawing?
You can use lightning network to withdraw, but to have this full trustless you will need to run your own Bitcoin node and connect Lightning wallet, or else you are just trusting another third party.
One thing you should NOT do, and that is withdrawing BTC using any other centralized blockchain that has fake bitcoin tokens (binance chain, erc20 chain, etc.).
1767  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do beginners know what closed & open source wallets are? on: June 05, 2023, 07:37:32 PM
I read some guide posts about custodial vs. non-custodial wallets but only a few about open vs. closed source. I often read them brought up by other users in the comments. I think many beginners don't have the slightest idea about the difference between closed and open source yet. I don't claim to be an expert on this but I will try to highlight that in this post based on what I understand so far.
I was advocating open source wallets for years and people told me several times that I am to extreme with this approach, but look what is happening with closed source wallets.
They get hacked, infected by malware all the time and who knows what else is happening below the hood, since nobody can check the code.
There is a high chance closed source hardware wallets have some hidden code or backdoor that can remain dormant for years and just waits to be activated.

Few more good examples of less known non-custodial open source wallets are Sparrow wallet, Airgap wallet, Unstoppable wallet, etc.

Very nice that there is such a big scene of people modding this wallet and creating accessories for it. If I have the opportunity I will definitely try to create a high quality casing
I don't understand why would you need a high quality case for this?  Roll Eyes
It's just a cheap DIY 3d printing that is available anywhere...
People did make premium metal cases for similar DIY devices like SeedSigner, but this is not needed at all and it can only attract attention.

What would maybe be possible would be fill the case with Silikone. Does someone has experience with that?
No.
Silicone is used for isolation, not so much for cases and 3d printing.

From the paranoid tinfoil hat wearing department, be careful where you buy some of these boards from.
This is general used electronic hardware and it's not connected with Bitcoin in any way, and this DIY bitcoin wallets are not very popular, so I don't see any danger here.
Official shop is always the best place to purchase stuff like this.

1773  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 🔥Satochip🔥 Hardware wallet - Electrum PR to be natively supported ! on: June 03, 2023, 07:57:28 PM
Hey @Tibu
I saw you are offering interesting new Satochip blank card in form of SIM card for making our own hardware wallet with Satochip code.
If anything happening if this SIM card is entered in old smartphone, or we still need to use card readers and laptops for this card?
And is there any other difference compared with other Satochip products?

I think this is very cool idea  Cool

1774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best open source hardware wallets for BTC? on: June 03, 2023, 07:46:07 PM
Does anyone know of any good hardware wallets that are open source? I've been using a Ledger Nano for years but not being open source is a deal breaker for me. With the Ledger Recover feature meant to help restore people's private keys/seeds by complying with KYC, the hardware wallet could be compromised as we know it. If it's not open source, it cannot be trusted.
You won't find one ideal open source hardware wallet device, all of them have some plus and minuses but you can find few of them that works for you.
If you are using only Bitcoin than one of the good hardware wallets is Passport by Foundation, and for multicoin wallets Keystone is not bad and they are both airgapped.
I am not recommending purchase of any closed source wallets like ledger, but I would also skip overpriced Trezor Model T.

Here is the list of Open Source Hardware wallets I am maintaining:

1775  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: How to disable Replace-by-fee on: June 03, 2023, 07:14:55 PM
since 4.4.1 version there is no Replace-by-fee checkbox in Electrum settings. Who knows how to disable rbf? Bitpay requires rbf to be disabled. What happens if I ignore this requirement?
Did you try disabling RBF in Electrum mobile version, maybe this settings is still available there?
You have the option to use older version of Electrum that support option to disable RBF, just download standalone Electrum version and use it temporary for Bitpay related transactions.
I don't know why Bitpay is doing this, maybe they think this is some kind of protection, and I would suggest switching to much better open source alternative BtcPayServer payment processor.

1776  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Monero terminated in Italy, along with other privacy coins on: June 03, 2023, 06:57:27 PM
I received this email notification from Binance, it appears that privacy currencies are being terminated throughout Italy. Translated from Italian
This is wrong information, they are not terminated anywhere and this is totally different from delisting from centralized exchanges, there are a bunch of options to exchange coins using dex exchanges like Bisq or other p2p trading options.

There is obviously a global agenda against privacy in all areas of life and they are preparing for CBDC crap, but people can still use whatever they want.
1777  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Jade DIY hardware wallet on: June 02, 2023, 07:57:15 PM
This made me laugh and sad at the same time when I know what experience we had with Ledger. It's hard to break the link unless you convince someone to receive the delivery for you and they don't know what will it be. This way you put them in risk too.
You always have the option to buy wallet with cash in store, or use PO box delivery with alternative name and address.
For people who want to break the link there is always a way to do it Wink

Very cool project, what I kind of miss as usual with this devices is a good (3D printed) case option, since the display is nice for just 10 USD, but nothing more then a gimmick without the option to put it in a casing.
There is a bunch of STL files available online for free, so everyone can print their own case version.
I know a guy who printed two case versions, one of them is more square shaped and other with oval shape.

CryptoGuide released one more video with custom cases and added camera:

1778  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Trezor hacked (again) on: June 02, 2023, 07:52:49 PM
True, I find Trezor One quite basic. It offers the bare minimum without bells and whistles. A Trezor T clone sounds like more fun to have.
It would sound more interesting to me if they added secure element, but I guess we are going to have to wait until they release new Trezor gen device with that, probably in the end of 2023 or in 2024.

SeedSigner DIY is definitely an interesting project especially for Multisig. What I didn't like very much, is to constantly have your seed on a QR code paper in use. Without a QR code it will be a constant pain to use.
That is downside only if you are using it daily, but for everything else this is much safer, especially if done as multisig setup.
I think this should be introduced to all hardware wallets as option, if they can verify that erasing everything really means that.

I find a small microSD card as used in a PiTrezor easier to hide and conceal. You can even easily swith wallets nearly instantly with multiple microSD cards.
And it's very easy to lose it  Cheesy
I wouldn't count that as only backup option, flash storage can go stupid sometimes (happened to me with flash drives).
1779  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Recovery - Send your (encrypted) recovery phrase to 3rd parties entities on: June 02, 2023, 07:46:01 PM
I would still not recommend a Model T right now, but at least if I got one, I knew what I'm getting, since code and hardware are open.
Same here.
I think there are currently much better hardware wallet options that are open source and their price is similar or less than Trezor Model T.
To name just a few of them like Passport (around $200), Keystone (around $100), and maybe even others that are cheaper and based on Trezor code but with secure element.

By using a hardware wallet, you're basically trusting them with your money, while the security of "be your own bank" shouldn't rely on third-parties. I really hate this part, and even when using offline software wallets, you have to trust someone. It's impossible to verify all the software you're using, even if it's open source. "Trusting" goes against the basics of Bitcoin, but it's inevitable one way or another.
It's the same thing (if not worse) if you are using computer as alternative for hardware wallet.
You are trusting computer hardware (closed source) and software (can be opensource), but we can all agree that old computers/laptops can have much more flaws, bugs, backdoors, security issues and more attack vectors.
Ask any security expert and he will tell you that hardware wallets (despite issues they have) and generally safer than using computers, if done correctly.
Whatever you are suing to improve security for larger amount of coins it's always better to use multisig setup.
1780  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: topman21 scam my 40$ help me on: June 02, 2023, 07:03:31 PM
Coins should be returned to original sender, BUT that doesn't mean everything should end with that.

I just searched the wallet address you provided and I was shocked to see that it was connected to a different account, I search scanned Blockchain.com to see if the wallet had only one transaction history or more and to also try to check if I'd see any connections with Topman but unfortunately it was connected to someone else.
This address was used several times so I am assuming this is not the first time someone pretended to sell accounts.
I think there is zero chances someone would intentionally pick exactly this address posted from LDL, especially since he doesn't have any reputation in forum like he claims and he exchanged merits with topman21.
This is obviously one of his his alt accounts:

https://bpip.org/smerit.aspx?to=LDL&from=topman21

It took a while longer to post because I thought about this for a long time and did some investigation. I find a lot of similarities here with topman21 with LDL.  I'm posting some evidence here so you can check it out a bit.
Sorry for ruining someone religious day, but this is clear evidence of multi-accounting and probably similar scamming cheating behavior.

The way you reacted to the pumpkin carving accusation compared to the way you're reacting here are very different, almost polar opposites.  From one extreme to the other, but both reactions point to guilt.  I don't see any compelling evidence to justify a red-tag just yet, but I'm starting to believe you deserve one.
Please don't tell me he participated in Pizza contest as well?  Roll Eyes
