2201  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [Poll] Should the minimum wage be raised? on: May 16, 2014, 06:14:34 AM
it's not going to fix everything, but the current problem is that the big corporations are eating up small businesses and multiplying in number, which means they get more "bidding" power with laws. they use loopholes to pay their employees as little as possible while gaming the social security/foodstamps, so yes, i think minimum wage should definitely be more than $7.25. the middle class is the engine of our economy anyways.

the waltons are worth about over $150 billion collectivelly, yet they don't make enough money to hire their employees full-time.

May 2014 is really early and 473 people is a small sample size, but...
It's exciting to see Rand Paul at the top.  Smiley

  • Does anyone know if his wife gave a green light, I heard she didn't want Rand to run?

you guys really think rand paul would make a difference? especially with how the political system works? as in, if he's going to be the republican elect, he's going to have to make huge promises to corporations and billionaires.

it's kind of like the people who thought obama was going to actually do things he said he'd do (i admit, i am one of them).
2203  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The Silk Road marketplace lives on, despite intense government efforts on: May 16, 2014, 06:04:27 AM
How does a SR work? Do you just go to the website and see lots of drugs for sale, you put it in a cart and checkout?

well, yeah. that's how it works basically. i read there's an escrow system which is to help prevent fraud. the funds held in escrow are released when the buyer receives his stuff.
2204  Other / Off-topic / Re: NBA Playoffs - Which team are you rooting for? on: May 16, 2014, 06:02:07 AM
their biggest problem is defense really. they are decent at it, but KD went cold for a while... but they couldn't stop westbrook OR KD at the end of games. points were had too easily. they need a good defender at the 3. they are a good team overall, but not championship caliber. i also don't think blake griffin is as good as everyone thinks, though he has made some big leaps this year.
2205  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The Silk Road marketplace lives on, despite intense government efforts on: May 16, 2014, 04:25:25 AM
this thread should be used as scientific research.

everyone says drugs make drug users paranoid. yet this thread is proving that druggies are not paranoid and trust strangers, that they will never meet face to face with large amounts of money

these con men tricks are to make people think its safe to use their service to store lots of funds, instead of just trusting them with small amounts for that days transactions.

be smart leave your main 'savings' in a proper bitcoin -core wallet and only use daily spend amounts. whether its SR or an exchange or any other third party service.

imo, i think it's the opposite.. druggies are a bit too trusting since their inhibitions have been lowered by the drugs. they're also more desperate for their stash, so they'd be willing to take on the high risk of buying illegal substances through the internet.

best way to lose your money is to gamble while you're on shit.
2206  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The Silk Road marketplace lives on, despite intense government efforts on: May 16, 2014, 03:49:40 AM
Actually the admins of the SR 2.0 have proved themselves to be a honest and trustworthy bunch. Even after a hacker stole thousands of BTC from their wallet, the admins refunded the users with their own money. Their actions were quite a revelation, at a time when the entire Bitcoin sector is flooded with con artists and crooks.

you realise the best con a conman does is to take peoples money. tell them it was stolen, but offer to reimburse it.

this method has been done by many boiler rooms and conartists for years, it costs nothing and the reality is that funds never move/were ever lost. and was purely a story to gain trust.

the easiest way to spot a 'story' is when the business does not close shop to redevelop its security, to audit balances or even simply show actual proof of theft beyond just their words

That story is very suspect:
If the admins are already wealthy enough to pay back "thousands of BTC" from their own funds, then why are they taking the enormous risk of running SR 2?
Silly "libertarians" and their utopian free market.  Cheesy

i don't know the full story, but the money lost could have only been the amount in escrow, in which case it wouldn't be as much as it'd be if everyone's wallet had been hijacked. that money could be paid back fairly quickly.

that's what i heard. and SR 2.0 is actually, in some ways, bigger than the old SR.. kind of a funny fact to me. the drug peddlers are actually the honest bunch.
2208  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: All things considered Brock Pierce, et al.! [w/POLL] on: May 16, 2014, 03:36:07 AM
wouldn't starting another pro bitcoin institution work to mute the bitcoin foundation's position as "the official group that represents bitcoin?" i mean, if you didn't know anything about bitcoin and heard about the foundation, you'd think they actually had a pretty significant influence on btc. it would be a good option for big players in the BTC market to go to if they don't feel like raping boys or stealing money from people.

You forgot lacing their alcoholic drinks with drugs and holding them at gunpoint. But hey, that was 15 years ago, and time on a Spanish beach where the age limit for consensual sex is in the low teens changes people for the better, albeit better for them.

BTW, does anybody know of a good 3D modeler that can reproduce the following image soon to be a meme?

This is what I have in mind:

you know there's something wrong when jerry sandusky is your favorite sports figure, roman polanski is your favorite director (outside of bryan singer), and your dates tend to prefer pokemon cards over alcohol (but end up unknowingly drinking it anyway).
2209  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Poll] Number of people you tell about bitcoin - vs - how many are interested ? on: May 16, 2014, 03:31:22 AM
i've managed to convert only 1 guy, but i haven't told many people. he actually bought a miner. the other 4 or 5 people i told about 1 year ago gave me the response you'd expect: "wtf that's not even real money." it's okay though, i don't feel the need to evangelize people. there's no need to stuff it down someone's throat.
2210  Other / Off-topic / Re: NBA Playoffs - Which team are you rooting for? on: May 16, 2014, 03:28:02 AM
i don't think OKC is a top tier team.. imo, it's between the spurs and miami right now. i don't know if OKC is not top tier because of the coaching or just the type of team basketball. they're not fun to watch either way though, it's just hero ball/iso.

2212  Economy / Speculation / Re: Forget China, India will be next on: May 16, 2014, 01:20:48 AM
There's nearly zero adoption in India, no nodes, no miners, no exchange, no infrastructure, nothing. I don't see it changing any time soon.

That means a huge market still unexplored. As far as I know there are lots of people with lots of money, and they are very strong in the IT industry, so for me it is like a room full of natural gas, just waiting to a spark to blow up

seems to me that india has less of a financial or entrepreneurial spirit than a country like china though. i don't think it'll grow seemingly overnight like it did in china.. but who knows, maybe i'm wrong.
2213  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CNN national poll: Rand Paul 13%, Bush 13%, Ryan 12%, Huckabee 10%, Christie 9% on: May 16, 2014, 12:28:34 AM
^ to expand on that very legitimate point with some extra quips: the US is extremely biased against anyone not running as a Democrat or Republican. It is effectively a two party system. It favors the establishment to a high level compared to European countries (where there are so many parties that they can form coalition governments, something absolutely foreign to us), and this socioeconomic discrimination is implemented mostly by states interested in maintaining their power structure, not the federal government. You hear about maybe the "Libertarian Party" or "Green Party" fielding a candidate for president, but only on the best of years do they manage to get access to 48 of the 50 US states, while the fourth-largest Green Party made it on 37 states in 2012, up from 25 in 2004. In many states, they can't even get write-in status. Even if you're outside the US, go ahead and subscribe to one of these third party's newsletters. The entire time while the Republicans and Democrats are raising funds for their campaigns, the third-party candidates spend twice as much effort on achieving something so basic as ballot access, and they spend millions on it every other year. It's absolutely unjustified, but they wonder why voter turnout is so low and the youth are actively ignoring the elections "politically apathetic."

In some other cases, the political parties, which are effectively government institutions at this point, barred Paul supporters (Republican-affiliated) from attending conferences, partly because Paul committed the highest of treasons by suggesting US foreign policy was partly responsible for 9/11, because terrorists obviously just hate us for our freedoms. This is tantamount to election-fixing.

-And all the US media wants to talk about is a few White guys scared off at polls by "Black Panthers." Hurrdurrrr.

yeah it's become too big of an establishment to take down, in part because people let themselves become ignorant/influenced by the media. it's no wonder that billionaires bought out the cable news networks.
2214  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Why is everyone so gullible? on: May 16, 2014, 12:16:56 AM
People are not gullible simply because they are willing to accept higher levels of risk than you are. The tone of this overall conversation seems to suggest that there is some objective rationally-derived level of risk acceptance that acts as a cutoff for being a moron, and somehow whoever the poster is gets to be the arbiter of that cutoff.

This is very reminiscent of some very basic interpersonal cognitive bias, whereby in hindsight we tend to interpret bad outcomes for somebody else strictly to stupidity rather than bad luck.

well, i'd have to say that the title of this thread is kind of cringey, but with mtgox.. the writing was on the wall, and yet people still continued to trade on there. it might be that people just weren't keeping themselves updated on mtgox's reputation.. and that kinda is on them.
2215  Economy / Speculation / Re: Forget China, India will be next on: May 15, 2014, 11:36:50 PM
i don't see india quite as money hungry or ambitious like china. seems to me that there is something in asian cultures that likes non-manmade commodities.. i mean, china has a history of loving their gold.

at this point, i think the most important thing is to establish bitcoin's presence in the poorer countries with unstable currencies.
2216  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: who are the youngest bitcoin millionaires? on: May 15, 2014, 11:34:53 PM
IMO, the younger you are when you become a millionaire, the more likely you are to burn through the money and end up back at ground zero...

Agreed.

I imagine that only after years of grinding away your soul as a slave making someone else rich can one possible
appreciate the freedom that wealth can bring. While I was an early Bitcoin adopter, I didn't follow my own heart and therefore can only imagine the freedom of wealth as I still must spend my days in chains.

Lesson to all you young folk out there, FOLLOW THE FUCKING WHITE RABBIT   Cool

imo, it's also about growing up poor, and being indoctrinated into a life of debauchery that leads to excessive and reckless spending. that's basically rap culture there. young people buy into that shit and as they get older, they usually find out that it's not nearly as important as it seems.
2217  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need help getting my son started {unemployed} on: May 15, 2014, 11:29:58 PM
After reading all the posts, I believe joining a sig program after reaching 60 activity is the easiest and most feasible way.

Since you already got 27 activity now, it will be just about 6 weeks to go to reach 60 activity if you keep posting.

I read in page 1 that you son is not fast at typing, but I don't think it will be a big problem.
After all, you don't need to type 60 words a minute to make constructive posts and you don't need to make lengthy 500-word posts.

The highest payment at this moment is the UpDown one (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=600446.0) which gives 0.0006 per post for members. So, with 20 posts a day, you could get 0.36btc (about $160).

I don't think it's per post. I could be wrong, but for only 20 posts a day, that seems like an awful lot of money they shell out to people. I think it may be 0.0006 per month... But again I could be wrong...

you're wrong, it's per post.. and i have no idea how they are able to pay that much out, but who's to complain?

Yup it is per constructive post.
The pay has been driven up very fast in the previous 2 months, due to the competition (between PD, Ritz and now UpDown). Smiley

it's insane though, are they really making that much money off of sig ads? they must be getting at least $20k per month in bitcoin revenues if they can pay out that much.

2219  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin & PoW is a waste of energy & destroys nature on: May 15, 2014, 10:37:16 PM
well, the energy it costs to mint coins and print dollars is also a complete waste of energy too then. while a lot of energy is used to secure bitcoin, there are way bigger fish to fry.
2220  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Glenn Beck calls bitcoin Edison's light bulb! on: May 15, 2014, 10:03:49 PM
Glenn Beck = Low IQ adult who believes in imaginary friends. Superstition is the end of reason, ergo Mr. Beck deserves no respect from anyone....

After seeing the thread title, and before reading the thread:
That was/is my question, Does Glenn Beck deserve the respect to be included in any worthwhile discussion?
He certainly has a large audience, but the same can be said of Lady Goo Goo and Justin Trouble.

His show is all internet-based now, no longer on TV.

He is still on the radio every morning, but I almost never listen.
I used to find him somewhat entertaining (and "almost libertarian"), but I felt burned way too many times.
Glenn Beck did introduce many people to some good books.  Smiley

Hence, why I listen to NPR, for you never what you'll learn from those opposite your views. Same true for not putting anybody on ignore.

BTW, thanks for letting me know that he's on the radio, bud.

You are welcome.
He is still going strong on Fox radio, in many cities (or he was as of a month ago)
I usually don't turn on the radio until afternoon; Dennis Miller is relatively harmless and sometimes funny.

would you say he's a toned down version (and less angry) of alex jones? both are kooky and like to point at people for crazy conspiracies after all. they're all in it for the theater.
