i don't even know the hollywood hills area despite living 40 min away  Cheesy

you are most likely much better off with a car though, especially if you want to visit other parts of LA. just be sure not to rent your car at the airport, where the rates are significantly higher.

not much has happened today, but i think everyone's still on edge. seems like everyone's waiting around for one or a few people to make a big move.
1903  Other / Off-topic / Re: Help with a faulty laptop on: May 26, 2014, 07:52:45 PM
It sounds to me like the cutting out was potentially a short circuit, assuming that you were just tinkering with the laptop without any earthing gear.

As for the situation you find yourself in, I would consider replacing the laptop. Unless it is worth quite a bit and is otherwise fine, I would say that it is false economy/too much hassle to sort it.

Sell the machine on eBay/Craigslist/Gumtree as faulty, and buy a new machine that fits your needs. You can pick up pretty good laptops cheap these days, and you will be pleasantly surprised with how much people pay for faulty goods on eBay.

Hope that helps!

probably not worth it to sell on ebay.. as shipping the laptop itself would cost him $15 or whatever that is in pounds.

I think it's the connector that is fucked now. One of the tiny little prongs or whatever they're called is bent and I cant get anything to come up on the screen. Hope the screen isn't fucked as if it is there'll be no point fixing it.

if the screen is fucked, you could easily buy a new panel.. easy to replace. or you could take the screen out of a broken laptop and see if that works.

Cheapest on ebay are like £60. Be better off just buying a new one (which I still might do).

How badly bent? You can still get it straightened up in most cases. If it's too small for your fingers, try with a credit card.

Not ridiculously so, just a little. I'll try bending it back into shape later. How do I find out what sort of replacement connecter I need?

how much are laptops in the UK anyways? probably something like 15% higher than in the U.S. i'm guessing. suckers, your prices are higher than your former colonies  Cheesy

Depends. Cheapest is around £200 for an compact Acer one, but from £300-500 is what you can expect on average to pay. Obviously that's not including macbooks and shit.

here in the united colonies of america, you can get an 4th gen i5 15" laptop for $400.

i'm really looking forward to the point where bitcoin is so big that one asshole isn't powerful enough to manipulate the entire market. we might be a few years from reaching this point though.
1905  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin set to overtake PayPal in 2014 on: May 26, 2014, 06:53:02 PM
I would love it if this happens. PP needs knocking down a peg or two. They need to rethink their fees and I hope bitcoin forces them too.

their fees are high because they either destroyed or bought their competition.. that's capitalism for you.

it would be nice if i were actually skilled at video games.. but most games that i play, i'm only mediocre to slightly good.. which means i'm nothing special. becoming a professional video gamer sounds ridiculous, but it actually works for some people.. and i still can't wrap my head around getting paid (and famous) for playing video games.
1908  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin set to overtake PayPal in 2014 on: May 26, 2014, 06:42:22 PM
Paypal downfall has been and will continue to be their bad customer service and the way they freeze you money for months. I would love nothing more than to never read another piece on PayPal (good or bad) for as long as I live.Go Bitcoin!

Paypal would have been extinct ages ago. But just because Ebay and other online retailers such as Amazon are supporting them, they are able to survive. Now with Bitcoin around, they won't survive for too long, even with the help from Ebay.  Grin

paypal is huge, and multiple merchants support paypal payments (newegg, tigerdirect i believe, and a bunch of other online retailers). they are too big to just disappear overnight. maybe they start to see some attrition, but that doesn't mean they'll be marginalized by bitcoin.
1909  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buckle UP buttercup!!! on: May 26, 2014, 06:07:11 PM
this sounds like a cool way to get people integrated with bitcoin, but it doesn't seem to be a real gamechanger or anything.. i'd consider wallstreet jumping in or a big corporation adopting btc a big deal.

Check this out:

Time traveler's story - Dr. Michio Kaku: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfmsqosEDF4

maybe im missing the point of the story.. but what is it? it even goes as far as to ignore logic, implying that you could get a sex change and reproduce by another version of yourself.

is the whole point supposed to be about a time/feedback loop? is that the only mind blowing thing?
1912  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: May 26, 2014, 08:25:16 AM
man i love how there's so much tension now.. everybody is gearing up for some huge explosion. it's time for some excitement.. i'll never forget last year's bull run felt. it was just disbelief after disbelief.. it went from $100 to $1100.. nuts.

$5 to $260 was actually more fun, in that it took longer but was more methodical with a five or ten dollar rise everyday and was much more unexpected.  The problem now is everyone expects fireworks, all the time and for history to repeat itself, only bigger.

Its rather like a good Hollywood movie that embarks upon a run of sequels, each one is bigger and louder yet somehow leaves everyone unsatisfied.

$10 to $260 didn't last very long though.. it peaked and crashed within what, 2 weeks? i don't remember correctly, but it felt something like that. the november $120 to $1,200 lasted what seemed like at least a month. if i recall correctly, it rebounded to $800 by the end of the year.

It actually took three months to get from $10 to $120...it then went vertical for a few weeks before Mark fucked up.  But that initial momentum was completely new ground, exhilarating partly because it was less expected.

@Risto, I'm not bored simply trying to point out that not only are the better things in life best savoured but that 'wham bam' action generally leaves people dissatisfied.  Ask your wife Wink

The more you gee people up that they'll be overnight millionaires, the more distressed they are going to be when it either takes longer or doesn't happen at all.

oh that's right.. i think i got my coins in february, and then in early april it shot up to $260.. so 2 month period. it was a pretty fun bull run, i just don't remember even paying attention to bitcoin until towards the end of march.

imagine if your bank were going around looking for accounts to "freeze" the assets of... just so they could somehow just steal your money. so many people would be enraged.

I agree about last years run up.  I don't think I will ever forget that feeling either.  Constant happiness coupled with not being able to do anything without checking charts every few minutes.

i wouldn't call it happiness, not for me at least. excited is more like how i felt. if i were to use the word happiness, i would have to have a feeling of being content. i guess i didn't have enough bitcoins to make me feel content with prices at $1200.
1916  Other / Off-topic / Re: No game of thrones tonight :( on: May 26, 2014, 07:41:47 AM
Well I read a spoiler about the fight but I enjoy Game of Thrones for how coherent it is and the quality of it much like anything else, if a story relies purely on spoilers then it's really not that good in the end.

It's like if somebody told me everything about Baldurs Gate 2, in the end, it's the way the story tells itself and the personalities of the characters' etc. that matter rather than knowing what happen itself.

don't get me wrong, it's my favorite tv show and i think it's easily one of the best tv shows ever (along with breaking bad). but all i'm saying is that watching the show now after i know what's going to happen makes it not as exhilarating as it should be.

I pose the same question when it comes to the death penalty that I pose to people who believe in god, what if you're wrong?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_exonerated_death_row_inmates

No, I don't believe in the death penalty, no matter the crime, I've had this argument with people before, it amazes me the lengths people will go to justify to themselves and others killing an unarmed person, it also amazes me how like the U.S Iran is but you will find all sorts of people ready to jump to the defence of the U.S when they do something wrong.

yeah that shit creeps me out. i don't like the death penalty; it's almost like people have this god complex, where they want to see the people they hate die. nevermind the possibility of a false conviction, it just doesn't feel right for a group of people to decide whether someone lives or doesn't.

GAHHHH!! >_<

i kind of envy you.. i read ahead and know what's going to happen. imo, it would be way way fucking better if i didn't know. it would probably be something similar to the way i felt watching breaking bad... where my mind was about to die from being blown so much.

Thanks. I just tried it without the battery and it started to power up but I took the harddrive out. I put it back in and it seems to be booting up but the screen obviously isn't in right as it's completely black. Is there any way I can fuck it up by trying to fit the screen whilst it's powered on because otherwise I can't see if it's connected properly or not? I think it's the actual cable that connects the laptop to the screen that's lose/dodgy so that should be pretty cheap and easy to fix I imagine. At least I hope so.

did you remove any ribbons/cables? yeah, sounds like that's the issue.. i actually read up on some guides, and it seems like those cables are often the defective part. if that cable is soldered on, then that would suck  Cheesy
