Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Yes - but I wonder what he means by that as an answer to my question.
You've written a linux kernel scheduler, great compression code, cgminer among I don't know what else Smiley
So I guess his answer to my question means "Yes"?
I'm not sure.

Meanwhile back in BFL land ...
I realised there was a rather important command missing - how do you get the temperature?
If it has no built in protection (unlike a GPU) then you'd want to monitor the temp and lower the intensity (well increase the inactivity) if it's getting too hot.
Some people live in hot places (e.g. Perth Australia - not me though) and well sometimes the ambient temperature may already be 40 degrees so the devices could possibly get hot and kill themselves - knowing about that before it dies would be good also.

(I guess I could add 'how do you get the fan speed' but these I think will use your standard fans without any regulation so they'll just run 100% 24/7 until they die)

having an issue with trying to use multiple gpu-engine speeds. i have a rig with 3 5870's and one 5970.

GPU 0 is 5870
GPU 1 is 5870,
GPU 2 is 5970
GPU 3 is 5970 - obviously from same card above
GPU 4 is 5870

I want to clock the 5870's at 950, 900 if they're not stable enough. I want the 5970 at 800 or 820 if I can get it.

memclock of 300 for everything.

So this is what i wrote at first.

./cgminer -o http://miningpool:port -u (username) -p (password) -I 9,9,9,9,9 --gpu-fan 85 --gpu-engine 950, 950, 820, 820, 950 --gpu-memclock 300

I just got a 100% cpu bug out of it.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Not sure, but that looks like a space after each ',' in --gpu-engine that shouldn't be there.

My GPU temps went up 5C when I switched from phoenix to CGminer. Any reason for this?

Before anyone says that you're imagining things... yeah, mine did, too. 5C on one, 6C on another.

Set the temp down then?

Set the temp down then?

This... cgminer allows you to set a target temperature if you have ADL support.  Probably your target is higher, so it runs the fan less.

I was feeling generous, so I thought I'd quote from the grossly underused readme...

AUTO MODES:
There are two "auto" modes in cgminer, --auto-fan and --auto-gpu. These can
be used independently of each other and are complementary. Both auto modes
are designed to safely change settings while trying to maintain a target
temperature. By default this is set to 75 degrees C but can be changed with:

[snip]

Fan control in auto fan works off the theory that the minimum possible fan
required to maintain an optimal temperature will use less power, make less
noise, and prolong the life of the fan. In auto-fan mode, the fan speed is
limited to 85% if the temperature is below "overheat" intentionally, as
higher fanspeeds on GPUs do not produce signficantly more cooling, yet
significanly shorten the lifespan of the fans. If temperature reaches the
overheat value, fanspeed will still be increased to 100%. The overheat value
is set to 85 degrees by default and can be changed with:

Errr... yeah, it can be done, but i think you're missing the point... heh
I just tested with an atitweak of a fixed CPU % (47%) on the .sh starting cgminer.

Phoenix: 69.5C
CG: 75C

Same settings, same fan speed.

CG does make an extra 4Mh/s, but if the 'price to pay' is an extra 5.5C, then it's kinda.. not worth it.

Okay, I'll bite... why?

All that extra heat is coming from somewhere. Since I believe in the laws of physics I would have to say it is using more electricity. The heat isn't coming through my internet tubes. It also reduces the lifespan of my video cards.

Um... that's like the argument of "use a lower power card".

[G]PU management->[C]hange Settings-> [A]utomatic
Make sure fan autotune is enabled, if not, hit [F]an auto to turn it on, hit [A]utomatic again
Hit [T]arget type 70, press enter

Problem solved
To save settings, return to the main menu (any key not reserved by a command, I use space), [_S_]ettings->[W]rite config file

Edit: [_S_] instead of strikethrough

Seriously if you don't want to run your GPU flat out, decrease the intensity... but this is the most bizarre complaint yet about cgminer, that it extracts more out of your GPU.   Huh
