Got it working!

I went back to cgminer 3.1.1 and used the -S option to tell it where to look.

I'll play with the other settings now and see if I can get it running without root, etc.

Windows 8 went back to Windows Defender and it still doesn't work for server 2012 sadly. Guess no av for me.

What was the other Microsoft av? 8/2012 switched back to the other one

As far as I know, there's only MSE: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

The only choice really is whether you need 32bit or 64bit.

I know they have some different versions, like Forefront, which is made to run in large enterprise setups (runs in client/server modes only, no standalone client installs).  MSE is purely a standalone client that can be used on any of Microsoft's OS products.  Should work on anything from Windows XP and Server 2003 on up through latest Win 8 and Server 2012 versions.

Ah, just realized they renamed it back to Defender for Win 8/2012.  Same thing, different name.  Only thing is it's already included in Win 8/2012.

So MSE download is for everything back to Win XP, but not for Win 8.

My ASICMiner USB Block Erupter is now working (XUbuntu).

I believe I only needed:

To be in the dialout group

cgminer 3.1.1 with -S [/dev/ttyUSBx]

Ah, well I had not messed with 2012 much.  Tried out an eval of Win 8, which lasted all of 5 minutes after it was installed because I can't stand the Metro interface.  Server 2012 at least goes to a somewhat normal desktop.  Can't see myself using it much either.

So, looks like I'll be mining with cgminer on Win 7 and/or Linux unless Microsoft comes to their senses and goes back to making normal desktop Windows like everyone wants.

Yeah well i got server 2012 free so its nice. I used a mod to get the start button back. Hope these retards bring it back with 8.1.

FPGA Cairnsmore1 are no longer working with cgminer. I reverted cgminer to 102e907a475723ceff0de915227296190e2f3beb (3.1.0).
Any solutions?

Icarus: sudo modprobe pl2303 vendor=0x067b product=0x230
Lancelot: sudo modprobe ftdi_sio vendor=0x0403 product=0x6001

On windows you must install the pl2303 or ftdi driver required for the device

I tried it, but It detects only 1 chip per board (out of 4) on my Cairnsmore1 and it does loads of rejects on p2pool. That's why I have to stay with cgminer. Latest bfgminer just compiled:

and watch what happens when you plug it in.

Run it as root or fix it the right way and give your user the proper permissions (described in many places)

I did some reading and found that USB devices have ultra restrictive permissions by default.  I'll get it figured out elsewhere as it is probably standard Linux stuff that's the problem.

I'll post a quick follow up here for others that have the same problem.

This means your account must have the group 'dialout' or root priviledges
To permanently give your account the 'dialout' group:
 sudo usermod -G dialout -a `whoami`
Then logout and back in again

That's for the older version. The new one does not use -S or /dev/ttyUSB as the driver model has changed entirely. You need to copy the udev rules instead only as per the new readme.

I tried following the README instructions to get 3.2 working and still no luck.

I made a udev rule.

/dev/bus/usb/002/012 is group plugdev.

I am running as myself and I'm in group plugdev.

/dev/ttyUSB0 is in group dialout.

I am in the dialout group.

I started cgminer with --usb-dump 0

It does not detect a device and syslog shows ttyUSB0 being disconnected when I start cgminer.

The new messages from cgminer are:

Again, cgminer 3.1.1 works fine with -S.

3.1.1 works fine with the same udev rule ( MODE 0666 and GROUP plugdev ) as suggested by 3.2

can the new version auto detect for gpu's as well?  thread concurrences etc?

GPUs don't lend themselves to this sort of optimisation in a meaningful way. Using the wrong settings just crashes the driver and then the application as a result.
